Rumpelstiltskin, The Game of the Name is a children’s musical that made its debut at the

Woodland Opera House in May of 2019.

Nominated for 11 Elly awards and winner of 6, this enchanting musical is based on the

classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.  

The poor miller’s tall tales get him into hot water as he brags about his shy unassuming

daughter, Jane’s, ability to spin straw into gold.  Music is composed by Vatrena King, and

book and lyrics written by Catherine Hurd, the team behind the award winning musical, 

Zuccotti Park.

 

Recommended for audiences age 4 and up.

Catherine Hurd

WRITER

Catherine Hurd graduated from UCLA (MFA Screenwriting) and from Florida Atlantic University (BFA Theater.)  She optioned three screenplays in Los Angeles, and won several screenwriting awards.

She produced the feature film, Bring Him Home (Ed Asner) and has written for Lifetime Movies. Catherine is the book writer/lyricist for the musical, Zuccotti Park, which won Best Director and Best Musical at Venus Adonis NYC Theater Festival. Catherine’s full length play, Until Death Do Us Part, was a finalist in the NYC Theater Festival. Rumpelstiltskin, The Game of the Name premiered at the Woodland Opera House and was nominated for eleven Elly Awards by SARTA (Sacramento Area Regional Theater Alliance) and won six. Catherine is a member of the Dramatist’s Guild of America.

Vatrena King

COMPOSER

Vatrena King graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Production & Engineering, with voice and piano as principal instruments. She then headed to Los Angeles where she worked at A&M Studios, performed in local bands and joined a cappella group Vocal Nation, composed of 6 of LA's 1st call session singers. She has performed or recorded with numerous artists, on tv & film soundtracks and several Disney children's albums and travelled for several years as a backup singer for recording artist Melissa Manchester.

 

For five years, Vatrena co-starred alongside Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), on the hit tv show Ally McBeal performing in the show's iconic "bar" with Vonda Shepherd and a host of guest artists.

 

She has been Music Connection Magazine's Top Unsigned Artist of the Year. Her original songs can be heard in the independent film All About Us. She is the composer of the award-winning musicals Zuccotti Park and Rumpelstiltskin, The Game of the Name.

Poppy Peach

PROJECT COORDINATOR


Poppy Peach Nichols is the Excecutive Director of the West Coast Songwriters Association. Poppy thrives in an environment that lends itself to collaboration, creating new ideas and fostering a strong sense of community. Poppy met Vatrena King when she enrolled her children in the Waldorf Preschool in Davis, CA. Their friendship eventually evolved into a work collaboration, as Poppy organized and helped produce Vatrena's 2011 Christmas Album and organized and publicized a successful concert of the same album. Presently, Poppy is utilizing her organizational talents in the production of "Rumpelstiltskin, the Game of the Name."
